Apple discontinues the iMac Pro

Last week, the news broke that Apple is now discontinuing the most powerful iMac model on sale, the iMac Pro. The web page to order also said “while stock lasts” too. As of writing, it is still possible to order the machine in the UK, but it wont be for long.

Apple launched the iMac Pro in late 2017, and it was never meant to be a permeant item in the iMac lineup, it was a stop gap product between the older 2013 Mac Pro and the new tower design Mac Pro. For those customers who needed the most powerful machine at the time, the iMac Pro offered that. However Apple is now steering customers to the 27-inch iMac, which was lightly refreshed in August 2020, until a new Apple Silicon based iMac comes out, most likely sometime this year. Judging by the results and benchmarks from the M1 chip in the Mac mini, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 13-inch, the next generation iMac should be a very powerful machine.

The current 27-inch iMac is still Intel based, with a 10-core, 10th generation Intel i9 processor, it can also be specced with a maximum of 128GB RAM and 8TB SSD.
