Sainsbury’s is reported to be currently testing the same cashier-less technology Amazon is using in its stores, those stores have made headlines in recent years. The system Amazon uses is called ‘Just Walk Out’ and it allows shoppers to walk in, scan your phone and walk around, do your shopping as normal and then walk out.

Bloomberg first reported this and their sources say that the Sainsbury’s in Holborn, London has had Amazon technology installed overhead, with ceiling-mounted cameras used to watch what items you pick up or put back. Once you leave the store, your account gets charged for what you walked out with.

Neither Amazon or Sainsbury’s have said anything when asked, the only thing Sainsbury’s said that a new version of its SmartShop system is being tested currently, with the system due to go live to the general public later this month on 29th November.
